ABOUT THE YA SUMMIT
In 2012, the Council and partners will organize two Young Atlanticist Summits, one at the GLOBSEC conference in Bratislava in April (in partnership with the Slovak Atlantic Commission), and the other at the NATO Summit in Chicago in May (in partnership with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs). The Chicago Summit will be the major public diplomacy event at the NATO Summit and will continue the Council’s strong tradition of connecting emerging leaders from North America, Europe, and partner countries with one another and with the Alliance leaders of today.
The Atlantic Council has a proud history of engaging next generation leaders on issues related to NATO, having organized high-profile Young Atlanticist Summits on the sidelines of the Lisbon, Prague, Istanbul, and Bucharest NATO Summits. Young Atlanticist Summits serve as a forum in which emerging leaders can share their ideas with one another, and with current Alliance leadership. Among those who have met with our Young Atlanticists at these previous summits are: President Barack Obama, Czech President Vaclav Havel, Turkish Prime Minister Recip Tayyip Erdogan, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Georgian President Mikhael Saakashvili, U.N. Secretary General Ban ki-Moon, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, General David Petraeus, and NATO Secretaries General Lord Robertson, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, and Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
Our summits are designed so that Young Atlanticist delegates share the stage with senior policy leaders, resulting in an interactive and dynamic exchange of ideas. Past events have been broadcast well beyond the Summit walls, being covered by over 30 international media outlets including BBC, PBS, Agencie France Press, and Deutsche Welle, among others.
